The UPSC Engineering Services Examination (ESE), also known as the Indian Engineering Services (IES) exam, is a prestigious national examination conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) for recruitment into various engineering services of the Indian government. The examination is designed to select candidates for key engineering positions in different departments, including Railways, Public Works, and Defense. The ESE is renowned for its rigor and is divided into three stages: Preliminary, Main, and Personality Test.

The Preliminary Examination consists of two objective-type papers that assess candidates' engineering knowledge and general studies. It is intended to filter out candidates for the Main Examination, which is more specialized. The Main Examination includes conventional (descriptive) papers that test in-depth technical knowledge and problem-solving skills in various engineering disciplines such as Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, and Electronics. The final stage, the Personality Test, evaluates candidates' suitability for leadership roles and their communication skills through a personal interview.

Eligibility for the UPSC ESE includes having a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or an equivalent qualification from a recognized institution. Candidates must also meet age requirements and other criteria set by UPSC. The exam is highly competitive, requiring a thorough understanding of engineering principles, current affairs, and problem-solving techniques.

Preparation for the ESE involves studying the relevant engineering subjects extensively, solving previous years’ papers, and staying updated with current events. Successful candidates are appointed to prestigious engineering roles in the Indian government, offering a stable and rewarding career. The UPSC ESE is a gateway to a distinguished career in engineering services, with opportunities to contribute to significant national projects and policies.
