About IIT Bombay

IIT Bombay was established in 1958 and is located in Powai, Mumbai. It is a public engineering and research institute and is one of the most prestigious institutes in India. It offers undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programs in various engineering and science disciplines. The institute was ranked 5th among the engineering colleges in India by the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) in 2020.

The institute also has many research and development centres, including the Centre for Technology Alternatives for Rural Areas (CTARA). It also has several centres of excellence in various fields, such as the Centre for Environmental Science and Engineering and the Centre for Excellence in Nanoelectronics.

The institute was initially affiliated with the University of Mumbai and was later declared an Institute of National Importance in 1961. In 1963, the institute was declared an autonomous institute and subsequently the Board of Governors was formed.

In 2010, the institute won the prestigious Institute of Eminence status, making it one of the top ten engineering institutes in India. IIT Bombay has been at the forefront of research and development in the field of engineering and technology. The institute has made significant contributions to the development of India’s space program, nuclear power plants, and telecommunications infrastructure.

The institute has also been a leader in the development of several new technologies, including supercomputing, fuel cells, and nanotechnology. IIT Bombay has also been home to several prominent alumni, including the former President of India, A P J Abdul Kalam, Nobel Laureate Venkatraman Ramakrishnan, and Infosys co-founder Narayana Murthy. IIT Bombay Hostel

IIT Bombay has a total of 16 hostels. The hostels are named Hostel 1, Hostel 2, Hostel 3, Hostel 4, Hostel 5, Hostel 6, Hostel 7, Hostel 8, Hostel 9, Hostel 10, Hostel 11, Hostel 12, Hostel 13, Hostel 14, Hostel 15 and Hostel 16. All the hostels are well-equipped and offer a comfortable stay for the students. Each hostel has its own mess and common facilities such as a reading room, library, TV and computer room, etc. Some of the hostels also have air-conditioned study rooms and other modern amenities.

IIT Bombay Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for admission to IIT Bombay, applicants must fulfil the following criteria:

• Must have passed the Higher Secondary Examination (10+2) or an equivalent examination with a minimum aggregate of 75% marks in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics.

• Must have obtained a minimum of 5% marks in each of the three subjects (Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics) in the qualifying examination.

• Must have secured a valid rank in either JEE Advanced or JEE Mains.

• Must be born on or after October 1, 1994.

• Applicants from the SC/ST/PwD categories are eligible with a minimum aggregate of 65% marks in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics in the qualifying examination.

IIT Bombay Selection Criteria

The selection criteria for IIT Bombay are based on the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Advanced scores. Admission is offered to the top 2,45,000 rank holders in JEE Advanced. The admission process also considers the candidate's performance in their Class 12th examination and their score in JEE Main. Candidates must also meet the minimum cutoff marks set by IIT Bombay in order to qualify for the final selection.

IIT Bombay Admission Process

IIT Bombay admissions are done through the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE). Applicants must appear for JEE Main and Advanced and qualify to be eligible for admission.

The JEE Main and Advanced are conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA). The exam is dedicated to all engineering aspirants who wish to take admission to the top engineering colleges in India. Apart from JEE, IIT Bombay also offers admission through the Direct Admission of Students Abroad (DASA) scheme.

The DASA scheme provides an opportunity for foreign students to gain admission to the institute. IIT Bombay also provides admissions through the GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering) score.

Candidates with top GATE scores will be eligible for admission into the institute. IIT Bombay also offers admissions through the CSEED (Common for Education and Development of Schools). This is a test conducted by IIT Bombay for admission to the undergraduate engineering program in the institute.

Candidates also have to appear for an interview and/or a written test. The interview and/or written test are conducted by IIT Bombay to assess the academic capabilities of the applicant.

IIT Bombay Placements

The Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT-B) is one of the premier engineering institutes in India and has a long history of successful placements. According to the institute’s website, the average salary for the 2019-20 placement season was INR 16.45 lakhs per annum. The institute recorded a total of 864 job offers from top-notch companies like Microsoft, Google, Goldman Sachs, and JP Morgan.

Other prominent recruiters included Amazon, Flipkart, Paytm, Samsung, Oracle, and Deloitte. The highest international offer was made by Microsoft for an amount of Rs. 1.39 crore per annum, while the highest domestic offer was made by Flipkart at Rs. 45 lakhs per annum.

IIT-B students have also been recruited by major consulting firms like Ernst & Young, McKinsey & Company, Boston Consulting Group, and Bain & Company. The institute also recorded a 100% placement rate in the 2019-20 placement season.

Internships 

IIT Bombay offers a number of internships for students from various disciplines. These internships are available for students from undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral levels. The internships at IIT Bombay are provided under different departments, such as the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Department of Electrical Engineering, Center for Studies in Resources Engineering, Center for Technology Alternatives for Rural Areas, National Center for Photovoltaic Research and Education, etc.

IIT Bombay Campus

The IIT Bombay campus is one of the most iconic places in India and is renowned for its beauty and grandeur. The campus is spread across 574 acres, located in the heart of Powai, Mumbai. The campus is home to several iconic structures, such as the Rajabai Clock Tower, the Vihar Lake, the Hostel Complex, the Main Building, the Academic Zone and the Library. The lush green gardens, sprawling lawns and open spaces provide students with a much-needed break from academics. The campus also has an Olympic-sized swimming pool, a basketball court, a volleyball court, a cricket field, a football field and a hockey field. The campus also serves as a residential hub, with over 30 hostels providing accommodation to more than 8,000 students.

The hostels are divided into two categories, the North and South hostels. Each hostel is equipped with a mess, a reading room, a gym and a TV room. The Student Activity Center (SAC) offers a wide range of recreational activities, such as music, theatre and dance. The campus also has an auditorium, an amphitheatre and a multi-purpose hall.

IIT Bombay Scholarships

IIT Bombay provides several scholarships to meritorious students. Some examples are:

1. Merit Cum Means Scholarship: This scholarship is available to economically weaker sections of society. It is provided to students who have achieved a minimum of 75% marks in their last qualifying exam and have an annual family income less than or equal to Rs. 2.5 lakhs.

2. Kasturba Gandhi National Merit Scholarship: This scholarship is available to female students who have achieved a minimum of 80% marks in their last qualifying exam.

3. IIT Bombay Alumni Association Scholarship: This scholarship is available to students who have achieved a minimum of 80% marks in their last qualifying exam and have an annual family income of less than or equal to Rs. 6 lakhs.

4. IIT Bombay Endowment Scholarship: This scholarship is available to students who have achieved a minimum of 80% marks in their last qualifying exam and have an annual family income of less than or equal to Rs. 2 lakhs.

5. IIT Bombay Merit Scholarship: This scholarship is available to students who have achieved a minimum of 90% marks in their last qualifying exam and have an annual family income of less than or equal to Rs. 3 lakhs.
