About IIT Kharagpur

Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur (IIT Kharagpur or IIT KGP) is a public technical and research university established by the government of India in 1951. It is the first of the IITs to be established and is recognized as an Institute of National Importance by the Government of India. The institute is known for its research and education in science, engineering, management, and humanities.

The institute was founded as an engineering college on August 18, 1951, by the then-Minister of Education Maulana Abul Kalam Azad. The institute was established to train engineers and scientists after India gained independence in 1947. The institute was initially housed in the Hijli Detention Camp where political prisoners were held during the British Raj. The institute's first Director was Dr Bidhan Chandra Roy, the second Chief Minister of West Bengal.

IIT Kharagpur Eligibility Criteria

The general eligibility criteria for admission to the IIT Kharagpur undergraduate programs are as follows:

1. The candidate must have passed the 10+2 or equivalent examination from a recognized board of education with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics as compulsory subjects.

2. The candidate must have secured a minimum of 75% marks in the aggregate of these three subjects in the qualifying examination.

3. The candidate must have also taken the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE)-Main and secured a valid rank in the same.

4. The candidate must have attained the minimum age of 17 years and must not exceed the maximum age of 22 years at the time of admission.

5. The candidate must also fulfil the minimum eligibility criteria for the particular program he/she is applying for.

IIT Kharagpur Selection Criteria

IIT Kharagpur's selection criteria for admission are based on the marks obtained in the JEE Advanced exam. Candidates must secure a minimum of 75% marks in aggregate in Class 12th with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics as compulsory subjects. Additionally, candidates must also qualify for the JEE Advanced exam. IIT Kharagpur also reserves a certain percentage of seats for candidates belonging to the Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and Other Backward Classes.

IIT Kharagpur Admission Process

IIT Kharagpur follows a two-step admission process for all its courses:

Step 1: The first step is the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE). All applicants need to qualify in the JEE to be eligible for admission to IIT Kharagpur.

Step 2: The second step involves a personal interview. All applicants who have qualified for the JEE will be called for a personal interview.

IIT Kharagpur Campus

IIT Kharagpur is a premier technical institute in India situated in Kharagpur in the state of West Bengal. It is one of the oldest and largest IITs in India. The sprawling IIT Kharagpur campus is spread over an area of 2,100 acres and is home to many academic, research and sports facilities.

IIT Kharagpur has 18 hostels for accommodating students. These hostels are named after famous personalities from different fields such as Rajendra Prasad, C.V. Raman, Homi Bhabha, S.N. Bose, S.K. Mitra, M.N. Saha, Satish Dhawan, Jagadish Chandra Bose, Raja Rammohan Roy, Vinoba Bhave, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Rabindranath Tagore, Subhas Chandra Bose, Kasturba Gandhi, J.C. Bose, Bhagat Singh, Syama Prasad Mukherjee and Ramanujan. Each hostel has its own mess, common room, reading room and other facilities.
